March Madness Early Thursday Games: Xavier Outlasts Georgia, Jayhawks and Spartans Roll

Not a particularly eventful start to the 2008 NCAA tournament. The third-seeded Xavier Musketeers rallied back from a 9-point halftime deficit to overcome the 14th-seeded SEC Champion Georgia Bulldogs by a 73-61 count to advance to the second round of the tournament in what was probably the most competitive of the early games.

Elsewhere, the top-seeded Kansas Jayhawks sent the Portland State Vikings packing, coasting to a 85-61 win in Omaha.

Fifth-seeded Michigan State was also a winner, evening the Atlantic 10 Conference’s tournament record to 1-1 by upending the A10 Tournament champion Temple Owls, 72-61, in Denver.

Xavier went undefeated at home in conference play, and its only loss home loss overall came at the hands of Tennessee, a team widely expected to land a number one seed on Selection Sunday.

While it’s clear that Xavier can play at a high level regardless of the venue, it has to be pointed out that they have appeared more vulnerable on the road during the season. But will playing at a neutral site serve to neutralize the Musketeers?
