March Madness: Big East Conference Tournament Projection

bigeast.gif

The 2008 Big East Tournament will kick off Wednesday afternoon at Madison Square Garden. The tournament will feature the top 12 teams in the conference — better luck next year, DePaul, St. John’s, South Florida and Rutgers — as they are given one last chance to solidify their standing with the NCAA tournament selection committee.

This year’s tournament, in my view, is one of the more wide open in Big East history. The conference is stacked at the top in terms of teams that can challenge for a Big East Championship — Louisville, Georgetown, Connecticut and Marquette all immediately spring to mind — and teams like Notre Dame, West Virginia, Pittsburgh and even Syracuse and Villanova always carry with them a seed of danger.

In earlier prefaces, I’ve noted that my placement on the east coast precluded me from being able to provide much in the way of analysis prior to the projection itself. This is not the case for the Big East. I’ve watched a great deal of Big East basketball this year, and because of this I can say that one team I don’t expect to take home the conference championship at The World’s Most Famous Arena is the Georgetown Hoyas. Time and time again, the Hoyas have caught break after break. Don’t get me wrong, they’re a dangerous team — look no further than last year’s NCAA tournament for proof. However, they also seem to have a lot of luck on their side — look no further than last year’s NCAA tournament for proof.

I wouldn’t be stunned if Georgetown won the tournament in New York City, but with the gauntlet they have to run, I expect their luck to begin to even out at the Garden.

Does the formula agree with me?  You know what to do.
